Productivity paradoxes and pink cosmo blueberries

Oh, and please be nice to low-energy you

Hi everyone,

This week I’m sharing Cal Newport’s (surprisingly skeptical) view on tech-led productivity, as well as how to give ourselves a break when we need it most.

Enjoy!

Try

Small shifts to help you live bigger

Prepare for your low-energy self

I could never understand why my grandparents set the table for breakfast before going to bed, or prepared dinner at lunchtime. But now I think about it, they had a point.

High-energy you is ambitious, hydrated, making lists, adding chia seeds to things. low-energy you is standing in front of the fridge at 8:43 p.m. hoping dinner will emotionally reveal itself.

If staring blankly into the depths of the fridge has never made your dinner come quicker, it’s time to prepare for your low-energy self.

In a high-energy state, make decisions for low-energy you:

  • Prepare tomorrow’s breakfast

  • Write the project plan

  • Pack your bag and put out your clothes

These small saves add up, leaving us less exhausted.

Plus, it’s the answer to that nagging question:

Q: “why can’t I just do this tomorrow?”

A: “I’m doing future me a favour.”

The Productivity Paradox

Cal Newport, author of Deep Work, shares a short perspective on computers and how they weren’t the productivity hack we hoped they would be. At least for a while.

It’s an interesting take: if the productivity argument has oversold and underdelivered in the past, when it comes to tech innovations, what’s to stop it happening again?

4x the price of the already not-so-humble blueberry, this is a stroke of branding genius.
